Bicycling Injuries

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), bicyclists face a higher risk of crash related injury and deaths than occupants of motor vehicles. In 2010, nearly 800 bicyclists were killed and there were an estimated 515,000 hospital emergency room visits due to bicycle-related injuries. A study sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that fatal and non-fatal crash-related injuries to bicyclists resulted in lifetime medical costs and productivity losses of $5 billion.

In Georgia, bicycles are classified as vehicles. However, many motor vehicle drivers consider bicyclists a mere annoyance that imped the flow of traffic. Negligent drivers speed closely past bicyclists on the shoulder of the road often causing serious injuries to the cyclist. In 2011, the Georgia legislature passed the "Move Over" law, which requires motor vehicle drivers to move over at least three (3) feet when passing a cyclist on the roadway. The law also requires drivers to wait until the adjoining lane of traffic is clear before moving over and passing a cyclist.

Negligent and/or impaired drivers who violate the Rules of the Road can be held liable for injuries and damages suffered as a result of their reckless and careless conduct.
